The Choking Game
Also called knock out, space monkey or the pass out game. It's Monday morning - kids are getting ready for school. I've got my cup of joe, some eggs and news media in front of me readily available for any questions and assistance the boys may need. Scrolling through the top media stories I run across this article called...
"Looking for a rush, kids play the deadly choking game" (Apparently this stupid game is making a comeback...)
I read the article, watched a 5 minute video and quickly stopped the boys from continuing their morning school routine.
"Boys come here and watch this video"
What happens is you get a rush or a high from passing out. There are numerous methods in trying to achieve this euphoric high however I am not going to list them. Instead I want to get across to you and the word out on how DANGEROUS this is! Not only does it take COMMON SENSE to NOT attempt this RIDICULOUS game, it also is NOT COOL to succumb to such peer pressure if you are ever faced with such a STUPID STUPID Game.
Of course your going to have some kids come up with excuses such as "well at least I'm not doing drugs"...
"It really is harmless, you just pass out for a few seconds"...
( Really?, better than doing drugs? Harmless since you just pass out for a few seconds? Really?) Let me ask you this.
Either way aren't you gambling with your life? DUH!!!
EXCUSES like that need to be addressed and some education on what really happens when you pass out.
For starters...
YOU ARE CUTTING OF OXYGEN AND BLOOD FLOW TO THE BRAIN!
WARNING SIGNS, SUCH AS BRUISING AROUND THE NECK, HEADACHES AND BLOODSHOT EYES.
IF YOUR KID DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT IT YET, A KID SOMEWHERE DOES!
"Researchers surveyed nearly 5,400 Oregon eighth graders, and 6.1 percent reported playing the choking game at least once in their lives. Among those who had played, 64 percent had played more than once and 27 percent had done it more than five times. Boys and girls were equally likely to have participated."
There is no telling how many kids have tried this and how many deaths have been labeled as a suicide.
Now this game is not new, this has been around for years. With social media outlets such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter it is now very easy for kids to take idiotic challenges like this in their own home. I understand that risk-taking is a part of normal adolescent development. This only takes a few minutes to share and sit down with your kids.
So here is my challenge to you, it's simple. Do NOT play the choking game, the knockout game, space monkey or the pass out game! That's it - I know your smarter than that and if for some reason you get the "Dumb Sense" to attempt such a task I hope you think twice and really realize that this can kill you the first time you do it!
